Trauma-Informed Parts Work

Your Trauma Isn't Who You Are, It's What Your Parts Are Protecting

IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy helps you heal trauma without being forced to relive it in detail. Instead of reopening old wounds, you learn to understand and care for the parts of you that are still carrying them, gently, at your own pace.

Understanding Trauma Through IFS

Trauma Doesn't Live in the Past. It Lives in Your Parts.

IFS offers a different way of understanding what happened to you, one that explains why trauma can feel so present, even years later.

Why Trauma Fragments the System

When something overwhelming happens — especially without anyone to help you process it, your mind protects itself by splitting the experience off into a "part." This isn't damage. It's a survival strategy that worked at the time.

Exiles: Where the Pain Is Held

The parts that carry trauma directly are called Exiles. They hold the raw fear, shame, or helplessness from what happened — often frozen at the age it occurred. Most of us spend years trying not to feel them.

Why It Still Feels Like Now

Exiled parts don't experience time the way the rest of you does. When triggered, they don't remember the trauma — they re-feel it, which is why old wounds can feel shockingly present. If this pattern sounds familiar from long-term or developmental experiences, our page on healing complex trauma in adulthood goes deeper.

A Different Kind of Trauma Therapy

Healing Without Having to Relive It

Many trauma therapies ask you to recount what happened in detail. IFS takes a gentler route.

01

No Forced Reliving

IFS doesn't require you to narrate trauma in detail to heal it. Much of the work happens through relationship — building trust with the wounded part — rather than re-exposure to the memory itself.

02

You Set the Pace

Exiled parts only unburden when they're ready and feel safe enough to be approached. Your therapist never pushes a part faster than it can tolerate.

03

Works Alongside Other Trauma Approaches

IFS integrates well with EMDR and somatic trauma work. If you're already familiar with EMDR, see our combined IFS + EMDR approach.

"Clients are often surprised that IFS for trauma doesn't feel like 'trauma therapy.' It feels like finally being gentle with the parts of you that never got to be." — Lekh Bajaj, Clinical Psychologist (RCI CRR-A79125)
Parts Work for Trauma

The Parts That Formed Around What Happened to You

Trauma creates a specific pattern of parts. Recognizing them is often the first relief.

Exile

The Frozen Child

A young part of you, stuck at the age the trauma occurred, still holding the fear, confusion, or helplessness of that moment.

This part hasn't been told the danger has passed. Part of healing is letting it know — gently — that it's safe now.

Manager

The Hypervigilant Watcher

A part that's always scanning for danger, even in safe situations. Exhausting, but trying to prevent the trauma from happening again.

This part developed because being caught off-guard once was unbearable. It relaxes once it trusts the system is actually safe.

Firefighter

The Shutdown Part

A part that goes numb, dissociates, or "checks out" when things get too intense — a survival response, not weakness.

Shutting down was likely the safest option available at the time. IFS helps this part learn there are now other options.

Manager / Exile Blend

The Self-Blamer

A part that believes the trauma was somehow your fault — often formed to make an uncontrollable situation feel explainable.

Self-blame is often easier to carry than the helplessness underneath it. IFS gently questions whether that blame ever truly belonged to you.

Core Self

The Self

The calm, compassionate core that can hold space for all of the above without being overwhelmed by them.

Every IFS process works toward strengthening this part's leadership within your system.

The Healing Process

What IFS Trauma Therapy Actually Involves

01

Building Safety First

Before any trauma part is approached, we build internal safety — making sure your protective parts trust the process before any deeper work begins.

02

Befriending Protectors

The parts that shut down, numb out, or stay hypervigilant get understood first, not bypassed. They're protecting the Exile underneath.

03

Witnessing, Not Reliving

Your Self witnesses what the wounded part experienced, without needing a full narrative retelling of the trauma.

04

Unburdening the Exile

Once safety and trust are established, the frozen part can finally release the fear, shame, or helplessness it's carried.

05

Updating the Part

The part learns that the danger has passed and it doesn't need to stay frozen in that moment.

06

Returning to Self-Leadership

With the burden lifted, you have more access to calm, clarity, and choice — even when old triggers appear.

Questions About IFS for Trauma

No. IFS doesn't require a detailed retelling of what happened. Much of the healing happens through building a relationship with the wounded part directly, often without needing to verbally recount the traumatic event.

Yes — IFS is particularly well-suited to childhood trauma. It works gently with frozen, young parts at the pace they can tolerate, rather than pushing for fast resolution.

EMDR uses guided eye movements to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. IFS instead works relationally with the "parts" carrying the trauma. Many clients benefit from combining both — see our IFS + EMDR approach.

Yes. IFS is often particularly effective for complex, relational, or developmental trauma, since it's designed to work with multiple wounded parts rather than a single traumatic incident.

This is common with trauma and is itself a protective part at work. Your therapist will help you build safety and grounding before approaching anything that might trigger this response.

This varies significantly based on the complexity of what you're carrying. Some people experience meaningful shifts within weeks; deeper, longstanding trauma may take longer. There's no fixed timeline.

Yes. Much of IFS involves internal dialogue and guided imagination, which translates well to video sessions. Many trauma clients find the added safety of being in their own space genuinely helpful.

Possibly. IFS approaches trauma differently than many talk-therapy or exposure-based models — it doesn't require you to "process" the event narratively, which is often where other approaches feel stuck or re-traumatizing.

Eight of our psychologists practice Internal Family Systems — a mix of Clinical Psychologists (some RCI-registered) and Counselling Psychologists, all IFS-informed through training workshops, clinical supervision, and continued study of the model.
