Who Can Diagnose ADHD in India?

Not everyone offering an "ADHD test" is legally qualified to diagnose it.

RCI-Registered Clinical Psychologists

In India, a formal ADHD diagnosis can only be made by a professional registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) as a Clinical Psychologist, or by a qualified Psychiatrist. RCI registration means the clinician has completed an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology and is legally authorized to administer diagnostic assessments and issue reports. Our psychologists — Kudrat Sachdeva (RCI A91587), Anasuya (RCI A94499), and Lekh Bajaj (RCI A79125) — are all independently verifiable on the RCI website.

Why This Matters

Many "ADHD tests" online are unregulated self-report quizzes — useful as a first flag, but not a diagnosis. A quiz can suggest you may have ADHD; only an RCI-registered clinical psychologist or psychiatrist can confirm it using structured clinical interviews (like DIVA-5) and standardized psychometric testing against DSM-5-TR or ICD-11 criteria. If you're planning to use your assessment for medication consultation, workplace accommodations, or academic documentation, it needs to come from a legally recognized professional — not a screening tool.

DSM-5 vs ICD-11: Which Standard Do We Use?

Both are used in India — here's what that means for your assessment.

DSM-5 (What We Use)

The DSM-5, developed by the American Psychiatric Association, is the most widely used diagnostic framework among clinical psychologists in India — including for our assessments. It requires symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity to be present before age 12, persist for at least 6 months, and cause impairment in two or more settings (e.g., work and home). We use DIVA-5, a structured interview built specifically around DSM-5 criteria, to make this assessment reliable rather than subjective.

ICD-11 (Used by Some Psychiatrists)

The ICD-11, published by the WHO, is used more often in government hospitals and by some psychiatrists in India. Its ADHD criteria are broadly similar to DSM-5 but organized slightly differently. If you're seeking an assessment for medico-legal purposes, insurance, or a specific institution, ask in advance which standard they require — most accept either, but it's worth confirming.
